Message but I also think the SEMA reactions are a little knee jerk too.

My guess is the real intent is to raise the MPG on the SUV light truck sector to get it closer to the cars. Think about how many of those tanks are on the road. And they get no where near the 20 mandate in city driving. MAYBE if you nurse it on the road it will.

Now if that segment of production did go up, yes, the overall 'fleet' average would rise too, and nothing be done to the cars.

So. A comprimise is in order. Redirect the legislation to the market segment that has made the biggest negative impact in recent years. Explorer and Navigators are not required by soccer moms, they just want them. A Windstar would work just as well. Or a Honda wagon for that matter.

Say what you will about gas prices and legislation. If it were not for what we went through in the 70s, cars would not be as efficient today as they are. And American iron surely would not be were it is (and it IS much better) if it had not been for the import pressure both in operating economy and build quality.

Even our beloved Zs would not be affordable for most to operate daily if it was not for the technology that drove up the MPG level (EFI)

Legislation needs watching and guiding, I agree. Not abandonment.
